UK Faces 20cm Snowfall as All Four Home Nations Brace for Winter Weather

The UK is preparing for a significant snow event that could bring up to 20cm of accumulation, affecting all four Home Nations, with snow expected as far south as Cornwall. Forecaster WX Charts, using data from the Met Office, has released maps and projections indicating widespread snowfall starting on December 12.

The initial snowfalls are predicted to begin at midnight on December 12, hitting Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the southwest coast of England. By 6 a.m., snow showers are likely to extend to North Wales and the Midlands, with snowfall rates reaching up to 1cm per hour. Scotland’s high ground is expected to see the most significant accumulation, potentially up to 20cm.

By midday, snow flurries will linger in Mid Wales, while heavier snowfall shifts eastward in Scotland, impacting areas west and north of Aberdeen. Regions identified at risk include Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Cornwall, Gwynedd, Highland, Moray, and Powys.

In the days leading up to the snow event, the Met Office forecasts mild but unsettled weather. On Tuesday, December 2, sunny spells will alternate with scattered showers in the south and west, some accompanied by hail and thunder. A chilly breeze will be noticeable, with showers spreading northward through the evening and an increased risk of icy patches overnight.

Wednesday, December 3, will feature a mix of sunshine and showers, with some heavy downpours, especially in the west. The east is expected to be drier with lighter winds and a chilly feel.

Looking ahead to Thursday through Saturday, further rain and showers are anticipated nationwide, along with a potential for fog across many regions on Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to hover around seasonal averages during this period.

This developing weather pattern signals the arrival of winter conditions across the UK, urging residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to prepare for snowy and potentially disruptive conditions.
