UK Braces for Widespread Snowstorm with Only Two Regions Spared

The UK is set to experience a notable snowstorm in the coming days, according to weather forecasts using the GFS model provided by WX Charts. Snow is expected to blanket almost the entire country between January 2 and January 5, 2026, with only a few areas likely to miss out on the wintry conditions.

Detailed maps from WX Charts, alongside similar projections from Ventusky and Netweather TV, illustrate large purple and white areas indicating widespread snowfall. Nearly every part of the UK will see flurries, while the South West—specifically Plymouth—and parts of the Midlands, including Stoke-on-Trent, are expected to avoid the snow, as are some other scattered towns and cities.

Snowfall is forecast to begin early on January 2, starting around 6 a.m., with some regions experiencing snow as early as New Year’s Day, January 1. Christmas Eve maps already showed snow covering significant portions of Scotland and Northern England at midday on January 1. The snow could extend to areas such as the Midlands, Bristol, and even North Devon.

Netweather TV’s New Year forecast highlights the ongoing influence of a high-pressure system over Scandinavia, which is blocking the usual rain-bearing systems from the Atlantic. This high pressure ensures cold, dry conditions persist into the New Year, with potential wintry showers developing along North Sea coasts, especially in eastern Scotland and north-east England.

In short, after a wet first half of December, the UK is shifting into a colder, drier period dominated by snow and frost. Residents are advised to prepare for freezing temperatures and widespread snowfall, keeping heavy coats at the ready.
