UK Braces for Storm Goretti: Potentially Worst Snowfall in Two Decades

The UK is preparing for what could be its most severe snow event in 20 years as Storm Goretti approaches, expected to hit Thursday evening. Forecasters are drawing comparisons to past significant snowstorms such as the 2010 disruption and the infamous 2018 Beast from the East.

Named by Météo-France due to strong winds forecast over the Channel Islands and northern France, Storm Goretti will bring heavy snow and rain, particularly impacting Wales and parts of the Midlands where amber snow warnings have been issued. The Met Office has also issued yellow and amber warnings for affected regions.

According to the Met Office, snow will begin falling heavily Thursday evening, starting on higher ground before extending to lower levels overnight. Snow accumulations of 10-15 cm are widely expected, with some areas—especially hills above 200 meters, including parts of Wales and the Peak District—possibly experiencing 20-30 cm of snow.

While snow should taper off by Friday morning, it will likely turn to rain or sleet at lower altitudes, yet travel disruptions and hazards are expected to continue into Friday. The combination of snow, rain, and wind will pose challenges across affected areas.

The Met Office forecast for January 8 warns of a cold start in northern areas with scattered wintry showers, while southern and southwestern regions will encounter wet, windy conditions and snow on hills. Severe gales are anticipated later in the far southwest as Storm Goretti moves inland.

Uncertainty remains over the storm’s precise track, which may influence which areas are most impacted and could prompt updates to warnings. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and prepare for potentially dangerous conditions as Storm Goretti moves through.
