UK braces for severe snowstorm with up to 43cm of snowfall across three Home Nations

The UK is preparing for an intense snowstorm that could bring up to 43cm of snow and plunge temperatures to as low as -11°C. WX Charts, using data from the Met Desk, has forecast widespread blizzards across England, Scotland, and Wales, with snow expected to reach as far south as London.

The peak of the storm is predicted to hit on January 11, starting in the early hours around 6am. The North East—near Newcastle and Northumberland—is likely to experience the heaviest snowfall, with depths reaching 43cm. London is also expected to be impacted, with accumulations of around 17cm forecast.

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, indicated the onset of colder conditions from January 1, when a cold front will push snow across much of the UK. He explains that snow will first appear in the Grampians and Scottish Highlands before spreading to northern parts of Northern Ireland, England, and Wales. Some southern regions, including Norfolk and Lincolnshire, could also see significant snowfall.

Dale cautions that this event could become a serious post-Christmas weather challenge, potentially described as a “nightmare after Christmas” scenario.

The BBC forecast adds that New Year’s Day will be breezy with bright intervals and wintry showers in the north. Temperatures will drop further on Friday, accompanied by patchy rain and snow on hills, while Saturday is expected to bring colder weather with sleet and snow showers along various coasts.

Residents across the UK are advised to prepare for hazardous winter conditions in the coming days as this major snowstorm approaches.
