UK Braces for Major Snowstorm with Up to 22 Inches Expected

The UK is gearing up for a significant snow event, with forecasts predicting up to 22 inches (56cm) of snowfall in some areas and temperatures plunging as low as -9°C. New maps and charts from WX Charts, based on Met Desk data, show a sweeping snow coverage across England, extending as far south as the southern coast.

Snow is expected to begin on Tuesday, January 27, rapidly spreading over large parts of the country. By 6pm that day, Stirling and Perth and Kinross in central Scotland could see snow depths reaching 56cm. Aberdeenshire and central Aberdeen will also be affected, with snowfall accumulating up to 22cm and 30cm respectively.

In England, nearly all regions are at risk except for the southwest. By January 28, central Scotland is likely to have about 10cm of snow, while northern England’s northwest and northeast regions could see accumulations of around 5cm. Even southern coastal areas, including Cornwall, Somerset, and Greater London, may experience light snow or dustings.

Scotland will face the harshest conditions, with temperatures forecast to dip down to -9°C as the cold weather front moves in from the Atlantic Ocean.

In the short term, the Met Office predicts for Tuesday, January 20: “Occasional rain and drizzle across central and eastern areas tending to clear allowing some brighter spells. Western regions will experience locally heavy rain with strong winds and coastal gales developing.”

By Wednesday, bands of rain will continue moving northward with some bright spells in between. Despite the unsettled conditions and windy weather, temperatures will hover near or slightly above average.

Looking ahead to Thursday through Saturday, the country will remain unsettled, with persistent rain or showers across much of the UK. Scotland can expect the most persistent rain and some snow on higher ground, accompanied by windy conditions and average temperatures.

Residents are advised to prepare for challenging winter weather as the snowstorm approaches.
