UK Braces for 400 Miles of Snow as Arctic Air Set to Sweep In Late January

The UK is bracing for a significant snowfall event next week, as WX Charts forecast a vast 400-mile-wide band of Arctic air moving across the country around Tuesday, January 27. This cold front is likely to bring widespread snow showers, potentially affecting large parts of England and Scotland.

Weather maps show that regions including East Anglia, the southwest, and the northeast and northwest of England could experience snowfall. Notably, parts of northwest England and Scotland may see accumulations reaching up to 20cm, according to depth charts from WX Charts, which utilize data from the Met Desk.

The incoming cold air mass is believed to originate from Siberia, pushing snow not only over northern areas but also southern regions, with flurries expected around Greater London and the southern counties.

Northern Scotland could face even heavier snowfall, with some areas possibly accumulating up to 50cm of snow. Similarly, parts of northern England—such as Cumbria, Northumberland, and Durham—might see snow depths of up to 33cm.

The Met Office’s forecast for late January, starting from the 20th, describes an ongoing tussle between milder Atlantic weather systems arriving from the west and colder, higher-pressure conditions pressing in from the east. Early in this period, milder Atlantic air is expected to dominate, bringing mostly cloudy, changeable conditions with showers or longer spells of rain, particularly in the west. Eastern areas should remain drier with some night frosts under clearer skies.

However, the forecast warns of a possible shift later in the period, with increasing chances of colder temperatures and snow across parts of the UK. While the exact details remain uncertain, the potential for a colder turn raises the likelihood of significant snowfall impacting the region.
