UK Brace for Intense Rainfall with Snow Threat in Four Northern Counties

The UK is set to experience a significant weather event, as a heavy rain front—or “rain bomb”—moves across much of England and Scotland. Weather maps from WX Charts highlight that as many as 93 counties will be affected by intense rainfall. More concerningly, the rain is forecast to transition into snow in four northern counties: Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, and Lancashire.

Starting from Friday afternoon, a substantial wall of rain will sweep through England. Showers will become increasingly wintry, particularly in the North East and North West regions. According to the latest Met Office forecast, the unsettled weather is expected to persist into the coming days.

From Sunday onwards, the forecast indicates the likelihood of continued unsettled conditions, with persistent showers or longer spells of rain accompanied by strong winds impacting most of the UK. Sunday morning should start relatively fine with only occasional showers, but rainbands are expected to move east or northeast during the day, giving way to intermittent showers. These bands of rain, sometimes paired with strong gusts, will continue moving across the country throughout the week.

Temperatures are predicted to hover near or slightly above average but will feel cooler due to wind and rain. The forecast suggests minimal frost or fog during this active period.

Looking ahead to the stretch from December 17 through January, the outlook remains changeable. Periods of rain, showers, and brisk winds—especially in western areas—will continue. Hill snow remains a possibility primarily in northern regions. However, intermittent spells of high pressure may bring drier conditions, increasing the chances of overnight fog and frost during settled periods. Overall, temperatures are expected to remain around or just above average, though colder spells could emerge when more stable weather develops.

Residents across the affected counties are advised to prepare for wet and blustery weather, with the added potential for wintry impacts in the north.
