UK Bank Holidays Revised: Date Delayed for All Households

The next official bank holiday in England and Wales is set for 31 August, marking the summer bank holiday, following England’s exit from the World Cup. Fans had anticipated a special bonus bank holiday if the Three Lions had clinched the trophy in the USA on Sunday night—but with England’s semi-final loss and subsequent third-place finish, that celebration will not happen.

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer had hinted at a possible bank holiday to honor a victorious World Cup campaign, but the opportunity has passed. Despite the disappointment, several bank holidays remain this year. In addition to the August bank holiday, Christmas Day on 25 December falls on a Friday. However, as Boxing Day lands on a Saturday this year, the bank holiday for 26 December has been postponed to Monday, 28 December, a practice known as a ‘substitute day.’

This rescheduling affects all four Home Nations: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The government explains, “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Employers are not obligated to provide paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays might also affect how and when your benefits are paid.”

The adjustments follow public interest sparked by a petition calling for a national bank holiday to celebrate England’s World Cup campaign. Although England’s dramatic 6-4 win over France secured third place, the petition emphasized the significance of a World Cup victory as a historic, once-in-a-generation event, capable of uniting communities and boosting national morale.

The petition stated, “Winning the World Cup would be a historic, once-in-a-generation sporting achievement for the nation. A victory of this scale deserves a moment of national celebration, bringing communities together and boosting morale across the country. Furthermore, a significant portion of the population will be staying up late to watch and celebrate the final. Declaring the following Monday a bank holiday would allow the public to celebrate safely and support local businesses.”

While the much-anticipated bonus holiday will not be granted, citizens can still look forward to the upcoming official bank holidays later in the year.
