The Sutton Coldfield community is mourning the loss of Jack Skinner, a cherished footballer and devoted father who passed away from cancer on Wednesday, June 3, at just 35 years old. Known for his passion on and off the pitch, Jack was a fixture in local football and deeply loved by all who knew him.
Jack began his football career with Sutton United Football Club, based on Coleshill Road in Sutton Coldfield, where he made a significant impact playing for the first team. He later played for Boldmere St Michael’s, also in Sutton, before returning to Sutton United to share his experience by coaching a junior team — a team that included his own son.
Pete Lugg, chairman of Sutton United, paid a heartfelt tribute to Jack, calling him “a player, coach, and legend” within the club. In an online message posted on June 5, Pete described Jack as “one of the nicest guys you could ever meet” and lamented the great loss due to cancer. He said, “Jack was taken by that terrible disease which has affected so many of us. He was 35 with his whole life ahead of him.”

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Pete shared the personal impact of Jack’s passing, mentioning the rawness of the loss and recalling his own experience losing a brother to cancer. He emphasized Sutton United’s commitment to supporting Jack’s family and organizing memorial activities.
The response from the community has been overwhelming. On Sutton United’s social media page, friends and teammates expressed their grief and admiration. Abby Cartwright said, “Jack was a fantastic human being, and his Puma boys adored him. He will be so missed.” Matt Gough described Jack as “a truly wonderful person and an even greater teammate,” while Sally Burke sent condolences to the family, remembering joyful times shared with Jack. Others like Ellie Albutt and Lyndsey Devaney highlighted Jack’s kindness and the lasting friendships he nurtured throughout his life.
Jack Skinner’s passing is a profound loss to Sutton Coldfield’s football community and all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy as a player, coach, and beloved family man will not be forgotten.
