Tributes Paid to Vera Holley, Beloved ‘NHS Hero’ of Sutton Coldfield

Vera Holley, affectionately known as “Holly,” has been remembered as a tireless NHS hero following her passing at the age of 95. For over two decades, Holly devoted herself to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, beginning her journey as an auxiliary nurse in 1969 within the Richard Salt Unit’s recovery ward.

Her compassion and steadfast commitment quickly earned her the admiration of both patients and colleagues, making her a cherished figure throughout the hospital. Even after retiring in 1995, Holly remained deeply connected to the hospital community. Alongside her husband, Ray, she volunteered extensively and spearheaded numerous fundraising initiatives.

Through raffles, auctions, and “bric-a-brac” stalls, Holly helped raise thousands of pounds to support hospital services. Her remarkable dedication was formally honored in 2008 when the Vera Holley Clinical Decisions Unit was named after her.

Kaye Caulfield from the Imaging Department praised her unwavering hard work and dedication, while Samantha McDonnell of the Cardiology team fondly remembered Holly as “a breath of fresh air” during her time in the Emergency Department.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust summed up the lasting sentiment: “Holly will be remembered with deep gratitude and affection by all who had the privilege to know her.”
