A tragic train collision near Indonesia’s capital Jakarta has claimed the lives of at least four people and injured dozens more. The Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train struck the rear of a stationary commuter train at Bekasi Timur Station on the city’s outskirts.
The rear carriage of the commuter train, designated exclusively for women to enhance passenger safety, was severely damaged. Rescue teams are still working to free five passengers trapped inside. Emergency services have transported around 38 injured individuals to local hospitals, including Bekasi Regional Hospital, where medical staff are overwhelmed by the influx of patients.
Authorities temporarily cut power to the Cibitung–East Bekasi railway line to ensure the safety of rescue operations. All 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek train escaped without injury. Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri confirmed an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

Videos circulating on social media show the chaotic aftermath, with panicked passengers and anxious relatives gathering at the station. PT Kereta Api Indonesia, the state-owned railway operator, issued an apology to affected customers.
Train accidents remain a significant issue in Indonesia’s aging rail system. Earlier this year, another collision in West Java resulted in four fatalities. Similar incidents in the past decade have also highlighted ongoing safety concerns within the network.
