Tragic Death of 26-Year-Old at Birmingham Bus Stop Linked to Potent Drug Mix

A 26-year-old sales advisor tragically died outside a bus stop in Birmingham’s Highgate area after ingesting a powerful combination of drugs, an inquest has revealed. Rayyan Mirza, originally from Hertfordshire and residing in Peterborough, was found deceased outside 290 Gooch Street just days after Christmas 2025.

Mr. Mirza had a past struggle with heroin addiction but was reportedly drug-free from mid-2025 until the day of his death. The coroner highlighted that this period of sobriety likely reduced his drug tolerance, causing him to underestimate the effects of the substances he consumed on December 27.

The inquest determined that Mr. Mirza’s death was caused by acute respiratory depression due to the combined intake of heroin alongside the novel psychoactive substances Medetomidine and N-propionyl chlorphine. These substances are significantly stronger than traditional sedatives and opioids and may have been unfamiliar to him.

Area Coroner Emma Brown concluded in her report that Mr. Mirza’s misjudgment regarding the potency of this drug mixture was a critical factor in his untimely death, underscoring the risks associated with new and potent psychoactive drugs.
