Top Midlands Comprehensive Schools Recognised in Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026

The Midlands' leading comprehensive schools, known for consistently outperforming expectations, have been highlighted in the prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026.

These schools deserve recognition for their exceptional achievements, especially considering the significant challenges they often encounter. Unlike grammar or private schools, which typically select students based on academic ability, comprehensive schools serve children from diverse backgrounds within their local communities. This often means they support pupils facing a broader range of social and educational hurdles, particularly in inner-city areas.

St Paul’s School for Girls in Edgbaston earned the top spot as the best comprehensive school in the West Midlands, with Arden Academy in Knowle, Solihull, securing second place.

The honour of being named among the best comprehensives is particularly commendable for headteachers, who must guide schools catering to a mixed student body with diverse needs. Helen Davies, editor of The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide, comments, “The educational landscape is testing—facing budget constraints, increasing mental health concerns among students, special educational needs, and an uncertain future. Yet, there is much to celebrate in the dedication of teachers who continually find innovative ways to enrich their students’ lives and provide them with the best possible start.”

Despite facing greater obstacles than their grammar and private counterparts, these comprehensive schools showcase remarkable resilience and commitment, making their achievements all the more noteworthy.
