Three Items DWP Claimants Banned From Purchasing Under Controversial ‘Ration Card’ Plan

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to introduce a controversial “ration card” scheme restricting how certain benefit claimants can spend their funds. Under this plan, individuals with criminal convictions linked to alcohol, gambling, or drug offenses will receive pre-loaded payment cards limiting their spending options.

Announced by the Conservative Party, the new cards will prevent benefit claimants from withdrawing cash at ATMs, transferring money, or purchasing alcohol, cigarettes, and gambling services. Conservative MP Chris Philp defended the initiative, stating that it targets those exploiting the welfare system, particularly criminals convicted of offenses where substance abuse or gambling were factors.

This policy draws from the existing “Aspen” card system used for asylum seekers, which already blocks transactions in betting shops and cash machines. The ration card will specifically apply to welfare claimants sentenced to community or suspended sentences related to such crimes.

Philp emphasized the need to protect hardworking taxpayers, criticizing previous Labour policies for failing to address unpaid criminal fines and enabling benefit misuse. He asserted that this plan will stop criminals from spending taxpayer money on prohibited items like alcohol and gambling.

Labour responded by highlighting issues within the prison system left by the Conservatives and defended their efforts to improve Universal Credit rates and youth employment programs. They underscored challenges in both the prison and welfare systems that their policies aim to address.
