This Week in Birmingham Food and Drink: Closures, Top Picks, and Exciting Ideas

Hello Food Club friends! It’s Kirsty Bosley here, your go-to guide for all things delicious in Birmingham — and yes, I’m kicking off with a little World Cup enthusiasm. As football fever grips the city, I’m keeping an eye on how we can enjoy the matches without surviving on just lager and vindaloo all summer. To help, I’ve put together a handy guide to the best spots to watch the footy — many of which also serve great food.

Late-night games mean late-night appetites, but if you can handle a post-9pm bite, this list has you covered. And if you know a place that deserves a shout-out, just drop me a line at [email protected]. I’m also happy to hear your top vindaloo recommendations!

On a more somber note, Birmingham’s vibrant scene took a hit with the recent closure of Autobrew in Digbeth. Unfortunately, the challenges facing local venues mean we’ll likely see more closures in months to come. It’s tougher than ever to justify dining out, so I’ve spotlighted some of Birmingham’s wallet-friendly Michelin restaurants — showcasing where you can enjoy top-quality food without breaking the bank.

If you’re budgeting but still craving quality, you’ll want to know about Clancy’s, an independent Birmingham pub offering creamy pints and a Sunday roast that’s even cheaper than Toby Carvery. Tucked down a Kerry green alleyway, this gem combines great music, sport, and a unique boil-in-the-bag boiled bacon dish!

Prefer snacking from your sofa? You’re in luck! We’re running a competition to win a smart TV and heaps of Mr Porky’s snacks — perfect for those ‘bag of scratchings’ nights in. Best of luck!

Personally, I’ve been indulging in a haul of M&S treats after a successful Vinted sale spree — feeling like the Queen of Sheba as I roam town. I also stopped by Banana Tree at the Bullring for small plates this week. Service was delightful, but the food didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

When you’re at the Bullring, where do you love to eat? I find myself gravitating towards Sushidog lately — not because it’s outstanding, but because it’s reliably good. I’d love to hear your top recommendations, so please keep them coming!

Catch you next week with more tasty updates!
