The Uncontested Election in New Frankley Amid Birmingham’s Fierce Council Race

Next month, Birmingham faces a crucial and highly competitive city council election, with hundreds of candidates vying for 101 seats. This race has expanded beyond the traditional three-party contest, now featuring up to six parties including Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, the Green Party, and numerous independents. The competition is intense, reflecting the city’s political diversity and voter engagement.

Alongside this major election, the city also hosts elections for other councils. Sutton Coldfield Town Council is preparing for an equally dynamic vote, with nearly 90 candidates contesting 24 seats and managing a budget of over £2 million, indicating high local political interest.

In stark contrast, the New Frankley Parish Council election, also held on May 7, presents a unique situation. With exactly 12 candidates running for 12 available seats, this election is uncontested and effectively a formality. Notably, eight of these candidates are current councillors, including the parish chair Jo Walker and several longstanding members like Susan Baker and Philip Johnston.

None of the candidates have listed party affiliations, as confirmed by Birmingham City Council. A spokesperson explained that candidates have the option to include a brief description on nomination forms but can also leave this section blank, which all New Frankley candidates chose to do.

While city-wide political battles remain unpredictable and hard-fought, the New Frankley Parish Council election stands out as a straightforward, uncontested process. Residents can expect all 12 nominees to be elected without a ballot, providing continuity in local governance amid a season of intense political competition in Birmingham.
