Nestled less than 100 miles north of Birmingham in Derbyshire’s stunning Peak District, Castleton is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in the country. With a quaint pub warming every 90 residents and twinkling tea rooms on every corner, this charming village truly feels like a scene from The Holiday.
Accessed via the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnats Pass, even the largest family car feels tiny driving through. Castleton blooms in spring, summer, and autumn with picturesque walking and cycling trails, each ending in one of its cosy pubs. Yet, it’s in winter that Castleton transforms into a magical getaway.
Snow often dusts the peak of Mam Tor, affectionately known as the Shivering Mountain, creating a breathtaking backdrop. In the village, cafés serve up warm, nourishing meals crafted from locally sourced ingredients, while The George pub delights with hearty dishes made from home-grown produce.

During the festive season, Castleton comes alive with colourful Christmas lights draping the pubs, tea rooms, and boutique shops. Fairy lights twinkle along bridges over Peakshole Water and wrap around trees lining the stream, which is dotted with whimsical fairy houses where ducks paddle peacefully.
The Christmas spirit fills every corner, from the decorated church trees to the village’s iconic natural wonder: Peak Cavern. Known colloquially as The Devil’s Arse, this immense cave lies beneath the ruins of Peveril Castle. Its mysterious depths and underground river continue to intrigue cavers and visitors alike. Inside the cavern, fossils from when the area was underwater sit alongside graffiti left by 1700s explorers, blending history with mystery.
Throughout December, visitors can enjoy carol concerts echoing throughout the cavern, their voices resonating far beyond, weaving festive cheer into the very heart of the village.
Castleton is a captivating destination all year round, but come winter, its cosy charm and enchanting atmosphere make it unforgettable—a perfect escape just a short journey from Birmingham.
