Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op Lock Up Cadbury Bars to Combat Rising Theft

Shoppers at some of the UK’s largest supermarkets are encountering a surprising change: their favorite Cadbury Dairy Milk bars, priced around £2.60, are now being secured inside transparent anti-theft boxes. This move aims to deter thieves who have been targeting entire shelves of confectionery.

Sainsbury’s confirmed to the BBC that these protective boxes are used on products frequently stolen, Cadbury bars among them. This trend reflects a growing problem highlighted by the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), which points out that chocolate and other commonly stolen items are increasingly resold on illicit markets, funding broader criminal activity.

James Lowman, ACS chief executive, emphasized the need for stronger police support and tougher sentences for repeat offenders, alongside measures to dismantle networks profiting from stolen goods.

Tesco and the Heart of England Co-op group have also adopted similar anti-theft measures. Steve Browne, CEO of the Co-op, revealed the company has invested £3 million in such security improvements after individual thieves caused thousands of pounds in losses by swiping entire shelves.

Customers have expressed mixed reactions on social media. Some note that alongside chocolate, other high-theft items like cheeses and smoked salmon have been locked up, often pointing to understaffing and lack of security as contributing factors. Others suggest that lowering prices might reduce theft or argue for stricter law enforcement on minor theft to curb escalating losses.

One user compared the approach to Argos, which keeps high-value items out of sight, replaced by pictures on shelves. These developments reflect a broader societal challenge where theft not only impacts retailers but also helps sustain criminal enterprises, including drug trafficking.
