Bananas are a popular fruit in many UK households, but they have a notorious reputation for ripening quickly and spoiling fast. Their bright yellow skin soon develops unattractive brown spots, eventually turning black, and the fruit inside can rot before you get a chance to enjoy it.
To tackle this common problem and reduce food waste, Tesco, one of Britain’s biggest supermarket chains, has unveiled an easy yet effective storage method: freeze your bananas.
According to Tesco, freezing bananas not only preserves their freshness but also maximizes freezer efficiency, as freezers work best when well-stocked. Courtney Pallett, Tesco’s campaigns manager, emphasizes, “Your freezer is your friend when it comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing food away. Most of the foods that often end up in the bin such as bananas and avocados can be saved by freezing them to use later.”

The process is simple. Peel ripe bananas before freezing them either whole or sliced. These frozen bananas are perfect for smoothies or as a quick snack and can be used straight from the freezer without thawing.
Some people choose to freeze bananas with the peel on and remove it once frozen. However, Tesco’s advice is to peel them first for ease of use.
Food content creator Lisa Bryan, known online as @downshiftology, supports Tesco’s recommendations and shares additional tips. She suggests freezing bananas in halves, slices, or mashed form for versatile future use. For single-serving smoothies, she freezes banana halves on a parchment-lined tray before storing them in resealable freezer bags. For baking, mashed bananas can be frozen in ice cube trays, making it easy to measure out ingredients for recipes like banana bread.
By adopting this simple freezing hack, shoppers can extend the life of their bananas, reduce waste, save money, and enjoy nutritious fruit whenever they desire.
