As the festive season approaches, Tesco has come under fire from shoppers over the steep price of its 750g Quality Street tins. A customer posted a photo on the Newton Abbot Facebook group showing the tin priced at £12, triggering widespread complaints from consumers.
The poster wrote: “What on earth is going on….. Tesco Newton this morning charging £12.00 for a tub of Quality Street!!” Breaking down the price, the 750g tin costs £1.60 per 100 grams, which many find excessive compared to smaller options.
A 550g tub of Quality Street is currently priced at £6, amounting to £1.09 per 100 grams — nearly half the price per weight of the larger tin. Several shoppers expressed dissatisfaction, linking the higher cost to packaging rather than content.

One comment stated: “Gullible people will buy them because it’s Christmas.” Others criticized the quality, mentioning: “Full of palm oil and less chocolates for your money… not worth buying even at a reduced price.” Another shopper remarked, “£12 for a half empty tin of sweets. I’ll give them a miss.”
Some defended the premium price by noting the limited edition tins, with one user explaining: “It’s because of limited edition tin hence the price—plastic tubs were on clubcard offers.” However, many consumers remained unconvinced, acknowledging rising chocolate costs but feeling the tin packaging added unnecessary expense.
Quality Street remains a beloved Christmas classic in UK households, competing with other popular selections like Cadbury Heroes, Cadbury Roses, and Celebrations. Tesco’s product descriptions highlight the assortment of chocolates in these tubs, often combining a variety of flavors such as nuts, nougat, coconut, and caramel.
Despite its festive appeal, the pricing controversy has raised questions about value for money and packaging premiums this holiday season, leaving shoppers wary before making their purchases.
