Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s drivers could save £468 annually on fuel

Drivers who fill up their cars at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Asda could save as much as £468 a year by filling up once a week at these supermarkets, according to the latest analysis from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The CMA reviewed fuel pricing trends through April and found that recent rises in petrol and diesel costs have been largely driven by increasing wholesale prices. However, the watchdog also highlighted ongoing concerns about weak competition within the fuel retail sector, which keeps prices higher than necessary.

Sarah Cardell, CMA chief executive, stated, “We understand the financial strain high pump prices place on drivers. While wholesale costs mainly explain price increases, limited competition means motorists pay more than they should. We are closely monitoring prices and margins and expect any wholesale price reductions to be swiftly passed on to consumers.”

Using price comparison tools and navigation apps can help motorists save up to £9 per tank. Since supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrisons are popular refuelling spots, this can translate into significant annual savings for regular drivers.

Matthew Briggs, CEO of Right Fuel Card, offered practical advice to drivers weighing their fuel options: “Supermarkets frequently compete aggressively on fuel prices, making them generally more affordable than branded stations. Premium fuels cost more due to added detergents and chemicals, but price differences also vary by location. Rural areas often have cheaper prices compared to city centres.”

He also warned against refuelling on motorways, saying, “Motorway petrol stations charge premium prices because drivers running low on fuel there have little choice but to pay the higher costs.”

By choosing where to fill up wisely and using fuel price comparison tools, drivers can protect their wallets from unnecessary overpaying at the pump.
