Teenager Overcomes Challenges in Care to Support Peers in Walsall

Emmanuel Boamah, 19, has transformed his life after spending three years in the care system, and he is now dedicated to helping other young people in Walsall navigate their own challenges.

Thanks to the £5 million Youth Guarantee Trailblazer scheme, spearheaded by West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker, Emmanuel secured a Youth Participation Apprenticeship with Walsall Council. This programme targets 18 to 21-year-olds who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET), providing them with paid opportunities to build vital life skills.

Having entered care at age 15, Emmanuel understands the uncertainty and lack of stability many young people face. Now based at Walsall’s youth hub, Our Place, he receives coaching from experienced youth workers while actively supporting others to overcome personal obstacles.

“Being in care didn’t offer much stability, so I wanted to create my own,” Emmanuel explains. “School wasn’t quite right for me, and I struggled with mental health challenges. I wasn’t sure about my future after leaving. This apprenticeship provides the structure and support I need, builds on my strengths, and allows me to help others in similar situations.”

Emmanuel is passionate about guiding young people toward their aspirations. “It’s not about what goes wrong in your life – it’s about what you do afterward. Never waste a conversation because you never know what opportunities might come from it.”

Mayor Richard Parker emphasizes the importance of these initiatives: “We are giving young people the skills and chances to start exciting careers and build fulfilling lives. Walsall is leading the way with this programme, connecting young people like Emmanuel to local jobs and training, creating lasting positive change.”

Councillor Mark Statham, portfolio holder for Children’s, Education and Lifelong Learning at Walsall Council, praises Emmanuel’s achievements: “He has earned his apprenticeship through hard work and determination. Emmanuel is an inspiration and role model who will positively impact many young lives. This programme opens doors for hundreds of Walsall’s youth and sets them on paths to success.”

The Youth Guarantee Trailblazer is part of a national effort, with West Midlands among eight key areas promoting youth employment and training. Emmanuel’s journey stands as a powerful example of resilience, opportunity, and the difference dedicated support can make.
