A 33-year-old cosmetic surgery worker from Tamworth has been sentenced to a community order after admitting to controlling and belittling her partner. Abigail Steggles appeared at Stafford Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to charges of coercive and controlling behaviour as well as criminal damage.
The court heard disturbing allegations that Steggles dictated how her partner could spend money, deleted telephone contacts, and blocked individuals from communicating with him. Additionally, an incident involving Steggles throwing a measuring tape was recounted.
The victim’s impact statement, summarised by the prosecution, revealed that he felt embarrassed and uncomfortable but was reluctant to appear bitter. The prosecutor highlighted the significant negative impact on the victim’s mental health, especially given his role as a man and father working in a predominantly male environment.

During sentencing, His Honour Judge John Edwards remarked on the age of the offences but acknowledged the unpleasant nature of Steggles’s behaviour, noting that her partner was subjected to belittlement. He also took into account Steggles’s good character and self-employment in the cosmetic surgery sector.
On the first day of trial in July, Steggles changed her pleas. While one assault charge was withdrawn, another was ordered to lie on file. The judge imposed a 12-month community order, which includes 60 hours of unpaid work and five Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days.
Steggles resides on John Street in Glascote, Tamworth.
