Owners of Skippers chip shop in Sutton Coldfield have expressed their devastation after a fire broke out during lunchtime on Tuesday, 1 September. The blaze began in a fryer at the Beeches Walk site, which was previously home to the Beeches Walk Takeaway, shortly before 1pm.
West Midlands Fire Service dispatched three crews from Perry Barr, Aldridge, and Aston to tackle the fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked on the scene for approximately an hour and a half to bring the flames under control. The owners of Skippers praised the fire officers for their swift and effective response, describing them as “absolutely incredible.”
The takeaway has remained closed since the incident but has now revealed plans for reopening and special promotions to mark its return. Skippers had recently been a contender for the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ award at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2026.

In a Facebook update, the owners shared their gratitude to the community and emergency responders: “We are absolutely devastated by what has happened, but most importantly, no one was injured, which we are incredibly grateful for. We also want to say a massive thank you to the firefighters who attended. They were absolutely incredible, and we can’t thank them enough for everything they did. Thank you to everyone who has sent us lovely messages, kind words, and offers of help. The support we’ve received from the community has genuinely meant so much to us.”
Looking ahead, the family-run business aims to reopen within the next few weeks, with early October as the tentative timeframe. To celebrate reopening, Skippers plans to offer 50% off all items on the first day, and as a gesture of thanks, all emergency service workers will receive their meals free of charge.
“We’ve put a lot of hard work into Skippers, and we’re determined to come back stronger than ever. We can’t wait to open those doors again and welcome you all back,” the owners added.
