Sainsbury’s, a leading supermarket chain, has submitted a fresh proposal to build a convenience store on the car park adjoining the Farmer John’s pub on Aldridge Road, Streetly. This marks their second attempt after a similar application was rejected by Walsall Council in July 2023.
The initial refusal was based on concerns about inappropriate development within the green belt, potential negative impacts on the local area—including the nearby Great Barr Conservation Area—and disruption to the open landscape character. Sainsbury’s subsequently appealed the decision, but the planning inspector dismissed the appeal.
The proposed site is located next to fields designated by Walsall Council’s draft local plan for housing development. The developer IM Land and Walton Homes have plans for a new neighbourhood of 850 homes on the adjacent land.

If approved, the new store would reduce Farmer John’s existing car park space by 45%, leaving 56 parking spots for pub customers and store visitors. The single-storey building will feature a sleek design with polyester powder-coated composite aluminium panels in a dark grey finish.
Representing Sainsbury’s, Alder King Planning Consultants stated: “The adjacent public house car park is currently oversized and underutilised. This proposal aims to optimize the use of previously developed land by delivering a locally focused convenience store with appropriate parking and servicing arrangements. Ultimately, the plan supports the long-term viability of the pub and its role in serving the local community.”
