Solihull’s School Streets scheme, which has already proven to enhance safety and reduce traffic around several primary schools, is set to expand with the addition of Coppice Primary School.
The initiative temporarily restricts vehicle access on roads outside participating schools during drop-off and pick-up times. Traffic regulation orders enable road closures, permitting only residents with permits and blue badge holders to enter these zones.
A report presented ahead of the Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure’s decision highlights the success of the first three School Streets: Oak Cottage Primary School, Marston Green Infant Academy, and Hasluck’s Green Junior School. Evaluation data reveals significant reductions in car use for school journeys—dropping from 31% to 8% at Oak Cottage, and from 57% to 41% at Marston Green. The scheme has also contributed to less inconsiderate parking, stronger community support, and safer, more pleasant school routes.

Most notably, 70% of Coppice Primary pupils live within one mile of the school. The school supports the new scheme, and nearby alternative parking options exist for parents and carers who must drive.
Councillor Ken Hawkins, Cabinet Member, stated, “Our School Streets schemes have successfully promoted safer, sustainable journeys to school, reduced parking pressures at gates, improved air quality, and created safer environments for all road users, especially our youngest and most vulnerable.”
The council will decide on the Coppice Primary School proposal during a virtual meeting on Thursday, July 9, available to watch live on solihull.gov.uk from 6 pm.
