Strictly Come Dancing Star Alex Kingston Opens Up About Husband’s Affair and Her Journey Through Heartbreak

Alex Kingston, best known for her memorable role as River Song in Doctor Who, has captivated audiences not only on screen but also on Strictly Come Dancing, where she continues to shine. However, behind her vibrant public persona lies a story marked by profound personal challenges and resilience.

The 62-year-old actress’s acting career spans iconic shows on both sides of the Atlantic—from Doctor Who’s sci-fi adventures alongside David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi to gripping dramas like ER, The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders, Arrow, and A Discovery of Witches.

Yet, the actress’s journey has not been without emotional trials. Alex’s early marriage to the distinguished actor Ralph Fiennes, whom she met during their time at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, ended painfully. They married in 1993, but their relationship unraveled when Ralph began an affair with actress Francesca Annis, his co-star who was 18 years his senior.

Reflecting on the collapse of her marriage, Alex revealed, “We were like strangers – very fragile. His mother was dying and somehow we thought the wedding was going to heal everything. But that was crazy, of course.” The affair began during a production of Hamlet in 1995, where Ralph played the titular role and Francesca portrayed Gertrude. Despite the age gap—Ralph was 32 and Francesca 50—their connection deepened, leading to Ralph leaving Alex.

In raw interviews, Alex opened up about the devastating emotional toll of the breakup: “I was feeling worthless, that I would never find anyone else as good as my husband, which is ridiculous, but I had so little self-esteem.” She also admitted to struggling with dark thoughts, saying the pain led her to contemplate taking her own life. Yet, she also credits the experience for shaping her current self, saying, “Divorce is awful but it is also something I don’t regret happening to me because it has shaped who I am now.”

After her divorce from Ralph Fiennes, Alex found love again with German writer Florian Haertel. They married and had a daughter, Salome, born in 2001. Though their marriage eventually ended in divorce in 2009 (finalized in 2013), Alex’s resilience never waned.

Today, she is happily married to television presenter Jonathan Stamp, with whom she tied the knot in a picturesque ceremony in Italy in 2015. Meanwhile, Ralph Fiennes and Francesca Annis’s decade-long relationship ended amid allegations of infidelity involving another woman.

Alex Kingston’s story is a testament to endurance and growth through hardship, illustrating how heartbreak can pave the way to renewed joy and strength.
