Strict Nighttime Driving Ban Imposed in Black Country Until 2027

Drivers in the Black Country are now subject to stringent nighttime driving restrictions aimed at curbing dangerous and anti-social behaviour on the roads. Following an injunction granted by the High Court, street racing—also called ‘car cruising’—is banned in Wolverhampton, Sandwell, and Walsall between 3pm and 7am daily until at least March 1, 2027.

This injunction prohibits any driver, rider, or passenger in a motor vehicle from gathering in groups of two or more where street racing, motor stunts, or other reckless and obstructive driving is taking place within these council areas. The measure is designed to improve road safety and reduce disruptions caused by illegal activities.

West Midlands Police are urging the public to assist in the crackdown through their Operation Snap initiative. This program encourages residents to submit footage captured via dashcams, CCTV, or mobile phones when witnessing driving offenses.

A spokesperson for the force stated, “We want to ensure our roads are safe for everyone. Operation Snap allows us to review submitted footage carefully. If an offense is confirmed, offenders may face prosecution or be required to attend a driver improvement course.”

The police emphasized the importance of not sharing the footage publicly before or during police or court proceedings to avoid jeopardizing legal actions.

The ban specifically targets dangerous driving behaviours such as “burnouts,” where drivers spin their vehicle’s wheels while stationary to damage tyres; “donuts,” which involve spinning the vehicle around a fixed point causing noise and tyre marks; and “drifting,” a method of steering with the car skidding sideways controlled mainly by throttle rather than the steering wheel.

Additionally, the crackdown addresses the offence of undertaking, where a driver illegally overtakes another vehicle on its nearside, violating Highway Code rules.

Through these measures, the authorities aim to foster safer roads and deter reckless driving activities in the Black Country.
