Stourbridge Pub Licence Changes Approved Despite Local Objections

An application to amend the licence of The Gigmill pub on South Road, Stourbridge, was approved by Dudley Council’s Licensing Sub-committee on May 19, despite objections from nearby residents.

The proposed changes include the addition of an external bar for busy periods, outdoor film screenings on a TV, and allowing under-18s to stay on the premises after 10 pm provided they are dining and accompanied by an adult.

Several residents voiced concerns during the council meeting. One complained about the existing smoking area’s lack of privacy, noting that occupants can see directly into their living room, kitchen, and garden—previously, small potted trees offered some screening. Another resident expressed worries about children viewing inappropriate films and questioned the necessity of an outside bar, citing the current low volume of customers and the significant noise carrying through the residential area, even reaching as far as Greyhound Lane.

Representing the pub operators Marstons, solicitor Chris Grunert assured councillors that films would be family-friendly, only screened before 8 pm, and that measures have been taken to prevent noise disturbance. He explained that sound levels would be controlled through a mechanical system, preventing excessive volume and nuisance.

The councillors were informed that neither police nor environmental health officers objected to the licence amendments. Additionally, residents retain the option to request a licence review should any issues arise in the future.
