Twenty years ago, beloved Australian conservationist Steve Irwin tragically lost his life while filming a documentary on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. In a recent interview on the Australian programme 60 Minutes, Justin Lyons, Irwin’s close friend and cameraman who was alongside him at the time, shared a vivid account of the harrowing moments when Irwin was fatally struck by a stingray barb.
In 2006, the duo embarked on a mission off the coast of Cairns to capture footage of the reef’s marine wildlife. Lyons recalled how they had filmed with stingrays many times before and described the excitement as they spotted a large bull ray. Both men slipped into the water from their inflatable boat, preparing to film their subject.
Lyons recounted how, as Irwin swam directly above the seemingly calm ray, it suddenly reacted violently, possibly mistaking him for a predator. The stingray whipped its tail, delivering a barb that pierced Irwin’s chest. Lyons described the ensuing chaos as bubbles and thrashing water obscured his view. When the water settled, he saw Irwin emerge, screaming, with blood surrounding him.

Irwin’s chilling words, “It’s punctured my lung!” revealed the severity of his injury. Lyons immediately pulled him into the boat where Irwin, clearly conscious, locked eyes with his friend and uttered the devastating words, “I’m dying.” Moments later, Steve Irwin passed away.
This anniversary on 4 September marks two decades since Irwin’s untimely death, which left a profound impact worldwide. The conservationist is remembered not only for his groundbreaking wildlife work at Australia Zoo and his captivating television presence but also for his passionate dedication to preserving nature.
Irwin’s family has continued his legacy. His daughter Bindi, now 28, honoured her father by sharing a touching video of him recalling the birth of his eldest child and expressed how his love and commitment to conservation continue to inspire her. Bindi revealed that her own daughter watches Irwin’s documentaries each morning, feeling deeply connected to her late grandfather.
Bindi shared heartfelt words on the anniversary: “Twenty years ago, the world lost the most passionate and dedicated wildlife conservationist. Our family lost our superhero. My mum lost the love of her life; my brother and I lost the greatest dad… I believe with my whole heart that his love will live on forever.”
Robert, Steve’s son, also paid tribute by posting a cherished photograph with the caption, “Your legacy is forever.” Meanwhile, Irwin’s widow, Terri, reflected on their final weeks together and the enduring nature of grief and love. She encouraged others to cherish every moment with their loved ones, saying, “We just may not know that we’re saying goodbye. Hold every moment dear. Until we meet again.”
