State Pensioners to Receive Two New £60 Cost of Living Payments

UK households are set to receive up to £120 in financial assistance ahead of Christmas, courtesy of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Household Support Fund (HSF). This scheme aims to provide crucial support to those struggling with the rising cost of living.

The HSF, implemented by local councils, offers varying types of aid depending on the area. Some councils provide direct cash payments, while others distribute vouchers redeemable for cash or essential goods.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, for example, is issuing £120 worth of vouchers to eligible households. These vouchers can be exchanged for cash at any PayPoint outlet and will be automatically sent to households receiving Council Tax Reduction (CTR).

Before Christmas, approximately 10,000 working-age households benefiting from CTR will receive two £60 vouchers. Additionally, in the first two weeks of January, around 6,000 pensioner households with CTR will receive two £60 vouchers as well.

Residents with low incomes who pay energy bills but do not qualify for CTR may still be eligible for one-off £120 payments through discretionary applications.

Councillor Paul Rowling, Deputy Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, highlighted the importance of the fund: “The Household Support Fund has been vital for families in our Borough for years. We’re pleased to offer vouchers again this winter to thousands of eligible households. Those receiving Council Tax Reduction do not need to take any action, as vouchers are sent automatically. Others may apply for discretionary support.”

He also encouraged residents to visit the council’s ‘Here to Help’ hub for further assistance with benefits and advice.
