State Pensioners to Receive a Non-Means-Tested £458 Attendance Allowance in May

State pensioners living with disabilities or health conditions are set to receive a significant financial boost this May, with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) distributing Attendance Allowance payments totaling up to £458. This allowance is designed to help cover the extra costs incurred when individuals need assistance with personal care due to their condition.

Attendance Allowance is paid at two weekly rates—£76.70 or £114.60—depending on the level of care required. The benefit is available to anyone of State Pension age or older (currently 66 and above, for those born before 1960) who has a physical or mental disability or a health condition severe enough to need help looking after themselves or requiring supervision for safety reasons.

Critically, this allowance does not cover mobility-related needs; instead, it focuses purely on care and supervision. Recipients of Attendance Allowance may also become eligible for additional benefits such as Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction.

One of the key advantages of Attendance Allowance is that it is not means-tested; your income and savings will not affect eligibility or payment amounts. Additionally, you do not need to have an actual carer to claim the allowance—it is based on the need for care or supervision alone.

To qualify, applicants must have needed help for at least six months, except in special circumstances such as being near the end of life. For those in the final stages of a life-threatening illness, the application process may be expedited with eligibility for higher payments.

Applicants must be habitually resident in Great Britain and have lived there for at least two of the last three years, with certain exceptions for refugees and those with humanitarian protection. Moreover, claimants cannot be subject to immigration control unless they are sponsored immigrants.

It is important to note that Attendance Allowance cannot be claimed if you already receive Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP), Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA), or Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

This allowance provides essential financial support to help state pensioners manage the additional costs of their care needs, ensuring a better quality of life for those living with disabilities or health challenges.
