Starting this April, state pensioners in the UK can access 11 exclusive freebies and discounts, complementing their regular Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) state pension payments. The annual State Pension increase, now set at 4.8%, is linked to the highest of inflation, average earnings, or 2.5%, helping retirees enjoy greater financial security.
This year’s 4.8% boost is based on earnings growth between May and July 2025, raising the maximum annual pension to £12,548—or £241.30 per week. Those with a full new state pension, awarded after 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions, will see an extra £574.60 per year.
Pension Credit claimants gain additional vital benefits. They receive NHS support for eye care, including free eye tests and vouchers toward glasses or contact lenses, valued up to £215 depending on prescription needs. Furthermore, free NHS prescriptions are available, saving £9.90 per item in England. Eligibility covers anyone over 60, under 16, or 16–18 in full-time education, with age automatically verified on electronically printed prescriptions.
An outstanding discount offers free passports to individuals born before September 2, 1929, saving £94.50, though fast-track passport services carry a fee. The Home Office plans an increase in passport fees to better cover costs, rising to £102 for adults.
Pension Credit recipients moving home receive a £24 discount on Royal Mail’s redirection service, which normally costs £84. This means-tested benefit supports low-income seniors with weekly payments of £227.10 for singles and £346.60 for couples, with extra support available for carers or those with disabilities.
Dental care is also free under NHS provisions for Pension Credit claimants, cutting the cost of routine checkups (£26.50 savings) and more extensive dental work, potentially saving hundreds.
A notable perk includes a free TV licence for over-75s receiving Pension Credit, courtesy of the BBC. The licence fee increases by 3.14% in line with CPI, with the black-and-white TV licence costing £60.50 and the colour licence £180 for the year starting April 2026.
Entitled pensioners can also benefit from Council Tax reductions, varying by local council, which can reach up to a full 100% exemption and discounts around £300 for partial relief.
Attendance Allowance offers additional financial aid for those requiring personal care due to disability or health conditions. Payments are £73.90 or £110.40 weekly, translating to £5,700 annually or £440 monthly.
Those receiving Pension Credit’s Guarantee element and paying rent may be eligible for full Housing Benefit from their local council. Additionally, eligible pensioners can access social tariff plans for as low as £14.99 per month, compared to the average £26.90, saving nearly £143 annually.
Together, these benefits represent a potential total value of £8,039, providing essential financial relief and enhanced quality of life for pensioners this April.
