Millions of state pensioners eligible for the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Attendance Allowance are missing out on tax-free payments worth up to £5,740 each year. According to MoneySavingExpert (MSE.com) and Policy in Practice, approximately 1.1 million people over State Pension age who live with health conditions remain unaware or unsure of how to claim this vital benefit.
Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested, tax-free payment designed to support individuals who require assistance or supervision because of illness or disability. With two weekly rates available, the amount paid depends on the level of care needed. Importantly, the benefit can be used flexibly—not just for personal care but also to cover home support, paid bills, meal deliveries, or even transportation, helping recipients maintain independence.
Despite its value, Attendance Allowance remains one of the most under-claimed benefits. Martin Lewis’ team at MoneySavingExpert has updated its guidance to clarify eligibility criteria and the correct application process, encouraging those who qualify to apply.

Example testimonials illustrate the impact: one Age UK client shared, “Since Age UK Durham helped me claim Attendance Allowance, I don’t have to worry. All these years I could have had help but I didn’t know.”
The current rates apply from April 2025 to April 2026 and are paid every four weeks. Crucially, claiming Attendance Allowance does not affect any other benefits or your financial savings and income.
If you or someone you know is over State Pension age and needs support with personal care, make sure to check eligibility and claim this valuable benefit from the DWP.
