A significant update to the Winter Fuel Payment scheme will benefit state pensioners, particularly those born before 1946. From this winter, pensioners over State Pension age (66) in England and Wales with an income of £35,000 or less will automatically receive a tax-free payment up to £300 to help with energy costs.
Previously, claiming Pension Credit was required to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment, but under the new system, all eligible pensioners will receive the payment automatically. The amount depends on the pensioner’s age, household composition, and the ages of those living with them during the “qualifying week” from 15 to 21 September 2025.
Letters will be sent out in October or November detailing the exact payment amount. The payment scale is as follows:

- £100 for pensioners aged 66 to 79 living with a partner aged 66 to 79
- £300 for pensioners aged 80 and over (born before 1946)
- £150 for pensioners aged 80 and over living with a partner aged 80 or over
- £150 for pensioners aged 80 and over living with a partner aged 66 to 79
All pensioners meeting the income criteria will receive the payment this winter. However, those earning over £35,000 will have their payment recovered automatically by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
This change ensures broader access to the Winter Fuel Payment, bolstering financial support for older adults during colder months.
