From November, eligible state pensioners in Scotland will begin receiving the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, a support scheme designed to help cover heating expenses during the colder months. This annual payment has replaced the Winter Fuel Payment previously available to residents north of the border.
Social Security Scotland advises that payments range from £105.55 to £316.70, depending on individual circumstances. Most recipients will receive the payment automatically without having to apply, with confirmation letters being dispatched starting November 2026.
Payments will be transferred directly to the same bank account used for receiving State Pension or any other Social Security Scotland benefits. However, individuals with a total income exceeding £35,000 may have the payment reclaimed by HMRC. It is important to note that this threshold applies to individual income, not combined household earnings.
The amount paid is influenced by factors including the recipient’s age, whether any cohabiting eligible individuals qualify, residency in care homes, and receipt of specified benefits either individually or jointly with a partner. Relevant benefits impacting the payment include Pension Credit, Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Income Support.
For those aged between 66 years and 3 months and 79 years (born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960), the payment will be £211.15. Pensioners aged 80 or older (born before 28 September 1946) are entitled to £316.70.
This measure aims to provide financial relief to older adults in Scotland by easing the burden of winter heating costs, ensuring they can maintain comfortable living conditions during colder periods.
