St Paul’s School for Girls Named Best Comprehensive in the Midlands

St Paul’s School for Girls, located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, has been named the best comprehensive school in the Midlands. The accolade comes from the highly respected Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026, where the school led the region’s comprehensive category.

Comprehensive schools, unlike selective grammar or private schools, serve students from all backgrounds within their local communities without entrance exams. This inclusivity often presents unique challenges, particularly in inner-city areas, making strong leadership and supportive environments vital to student success.

St Paul’s stands out with over 1,000 students on roll and a recent Ofsted inspection rating of ‘outstanding’ – the highest possible. The February 2023 inspection praised the school’s leadership for cultivating a welcoming culture marked by high ambition for all pupils.

Ofsted’s report highlights the strong, caring relationships between staff and students, noting pupils’ exceptional conduct both in lessons and social settings. The school fosters confidence, politeness, and mutual respect among its community.

The comprehensive curriculum is broad and ambitious, tailored to meet the needs of all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged or have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Students feel safe and supported, with bullying reportedly rare and swiftly addressed when it occurs.

This recognition underscores St Paul’s commitment to academic excellence combined with a nurturing, inclusive environment that prepares students not just academically but socially and emotionally.
