Speed Limit Reduced to 50mph at A1(M) Junctions 58 and 59 in December

Drivers travelling through County Durham will face a temporary reduction in the national speed limit to 50mph along a key stretch of the A1(M) from December 3. National Highways has announced the speed cut to facilitate essential bridge inspection work between Junctions 58 and 59.

The 50mph limit will be in effect overnight, from 8pm to 6am, for two nights or until the inspections are complete. This precautionary measure covers the northbound carriageway beginning 400 metres north of the Burtree Lane underbridge for 1,500 metres, as well as the southbound carriageway starting 260 metres north of the entry slip road at Junction 59, extending southwards for 1,400 metres.

National Highways emphasized the importance of this work for maintaining the safety and structural integrity of the bridges. A spokesperson stated that scheduling the inspections overnight helps minimize disruption for commuters and freight drivers who depend on the A1(M) daily. They also assured that emergency services will maintain prompt response capabilities throughout the operation.
