Speed Camera Vans Patrol West Midlands’ Most Traveled Speeding Hotspots

Each year, thousands of drivers in the West Midlands are caught speeding by police speed camera vans. These marked mobile units, easily recognized by speed camera symbols, actively patrol various roads to enforce speed limits and promote safer driving.

Unlike fixed cameras, these vans move regularly, targeting roads known for frequent speeding issues. Their presence is often unpredictable, catching motorists unaware and leading to numerous speeding fines.

A recent freedom of information request made by BirminghamLive to West Midlands Police revealed the roads where these vans are deployed most often and where speeding offences peak.

Leading the list for 2025 (up to November) is the A4041 Newton Road near West Bromwich, where speed camera vans recorded 941 speeding incidents — averaging more than two motorists caught a day, despite the vans not being present daily.

Other high-activity areas include the A34 Birmingham Road near Scott Arms, with 866 speeding detections. While the data focuses on Black Country boroughs, many locations lie along routes familiar to Birmingham residents who commute frequently.

Motorists should be aware that while fixed cameras are known and predictable, these mobile units can appear at any time and place, making it essential to always adhere to speed limits. Those living near or commuting on these hotspot roads should remain vigilant, as even momentary speeding can lead to costly penalties.
