Sparkhill Councillor Candidate Acknowledges Past Mistakes, Seeks Community Support

Shahid Butt, a Sparkhill resident and candidate for the upcoming city council elections, openly admits to a troubled past but hopes voters will focus on his vision for community improvement. At 60, Butt reflects on his life journey, acknowledging mistakes and expressing regrets while insisting that current portrayals of him as a violent extremist are misleading.

Born and raised in Sparkhill, Butt witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by his community, particularly as a minority growing up amid racial tensions. In his youth, he was involved in the Lynx gang, which confronted far-right groups targeting immigrant communities in the 1970s and ’80s. He recounts feeling anger and frustration as a young Pakistani in Birmingham, which led him down a path of street fighting and militancy.

Butt’s radicalization deepened after the Salman Rushdie controversy, involving him in Islamic protests and later in extremist activities linked to the now-notorious Finsbury Park mosque. In the late 1990s, Butt traveled to Yemen, where he was captured and convicted in connection with alleged terrorist plots targeting Western interests. He served five years in Yemeni prison before his release in 2003.

Despite the conviction, Butt maintains his innocence regarding terrorism charges, describing his arrest and imprisonment as the result of coerced confessions and fabricated evidence. He admits to regretting the violent phases of his past and emphasizes his transformation since then.

Today, Butt dedicates himself to preventing young people from repeating his mistakes. He has collaborated with the Home Office and engaged in mentorship and public speaking roles to steer youth away from radicalization and crime.

His campaign with the Independent Candidates Alliance, alongside other activists advocating for pro-Palestine and anti-Zionist views, focuses on local issues rather than international conflicts. Butt is passionate about improving Sparkhill’s safety, education, and community cohesion. He advocates cleaner streets, safer neighborhoods, and opportunities for young people to thrive.

While controversial for some of his outspoken views, including strong positions on immigration and support for certain movements, Butt stresses his commitment to Sparkhill’s future. He denies current involvement in the social housing sector amid inquiries related to others in the field, clarifying his focus remains on serving his community.

Facing inevitable scrutiny over his past, Butt is determined to redirect attention toward his efforts to make Sparkhill a better place for all its residents.
