A severe heatwave is sweeping through southern Europe this weekend, with Spain, France, and Italy all issuing rare orange heat alerts as temperatures soar to around 40°C in some areas. Experts are also warning of “super tropical nights,” when nighttime temperatures remain unusually high, increasing health risks.
In Italy, cities such as Bologna, Brescia, Perugia, and Turin face orange warnings with daytime highs between 33°C and 36°C. Similarly, 26 regions in France are under orange alert, with meteorologists forecasting temperatures ranging from 34°C to 38°C during Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21. The hottest spots include the French Riviera and Corsica, where highs could reach 38°C, while Paris and the Ile-de-France region expect temperatures near 36-37°C, approaching June records.
Portugal and Germany will also feel the heat, with temperatures climbing into the 30s. Southern Spain, particularly Andalusia, is projected to endure stifling conditions, with Madrid expecting temperatures up to 40°C and Seville around 36°C. Even the UK is not exempt, with London potentially reaching 34°C.

The UK Health and Security Agency has issued a warning, highlighting an increased risk of heat-related deaths, especially among those aged 65 and older or with pre-existing health conditions, though younger age groups may also be affected. The agency notes that hospitals and care homes may face internal temperatures above safe thresholds, potentially impacting patient care and workforce performance.
Spain’s AEMET urges residents and visitors to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and to stay well hydrated. They recommend shopping early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak heat. The combination of extreme daytime temperatures and warm nights raises risks for vulnerable groups and escalates fire dangers, not only in traditionally fire-prone southern and eastern areas but also in northern regions.
As Europe grapples with this sweltering heatwave, caution and preparedness remain essential to mitigate health risks and other hazards.
