A violent altercation erupted on Southend High Street involving approximately 30 teenagers armed with knives and bottles, resulting in two victims sustaining slash injuries to their faces. Essex Police responded swiftly to the incident, which took place on the evening of Friday, 1 May.
At around 7:50 pm, officers were called to the scene following reports of a large-scale fight. The police statement confirmed that weapons, including knives and bottles, were both brandished and used during the confrontation. The two injured teenagers were immediately transported to the hospital, where their injuries are being treated, though thankfully not considered life-threatening.
In response to the disturbance, Essex Police have introduced several measures to maintain public safety and prevent further anti-social behavior. A dispersal order under Section 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act has been enacted. This order covers Southend High Street, Queensway extending to Hamlet Court Road, and the nearby seafront, empowering officers to disperse groups to prevent harassment, alarm, distress, or crime.
Additionally, a Section 60 order under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act grants officers the authority to search individuals and vehicles within the designated area without needing suspicion, focusing on locating offensive weapons. Another order under Section 60AA mandates the removal of face coverings upon police request, facilitating identity checks during operations.
Essex Police continue to maintain a strong presence in the area, monitoring the situation and working to restore order while safeguarding members of the community.
