Southampton Football Club is bracing for the outcome of a Football Association (FA) hearing this week concerning manager Tonda Eckert, who faces a potential ban linked to the spygate scandal that marred last season’s Championship play-offs.
The FA is set to determine whether to impose sanctions on Eckert for his involvement in the controversy that saw a Southampton employee caught spying on Middlesbrough’s training sessions ahead of the play-off semi-final between the two clubs in May. Southampton also admitted to similar spying activities involving Oxford United and Ipswich Town in the previous season.
As a result of the incident, Southampton were expelled from the play-offs despite having defeated Middlesbrough over two legs and began the subsequent season with a four-point deduction.

Eckert has been actively managing Southampton during the uncertainty, including leading the team in their recent clash against Championship rivals Birmingham City and in seven other fixtures this season. When speaking to the BBC, Eckert commented, “I’ve had the chance to sit down and just talk the FA through everything that happened. And now it’s up to them to make a decision. I don’t really have any emotions towards that.”
Reflecting on the situation, the German manager acknowledged the severity of the club’s punishment, stating, “It’s been a big, big punishment. Absolutely unheard of in the history of sports. And it’s tough for me to say that because it concerns me. I’m judging on myself, not an outside situation. But I’ve asked for forgiveness for what I’ve done. I’ve apologised publicly.”
He added, “I think the punishment has been very hard on the club for the last season, and to go into a new season on minus four. And the rest is not for me to decide.”
The prospect of Eckert receiving a ban has raised concerns within Southampton, as the club could face managing without him for a period or possibly having to make a managerial change.
Southampton’s chief executive Phil Parsons said, “He’s a young manager, he made a mistake and he’s apologised for that. He’s suffered personally because of this. Tonda is also a manager who picked up a team that were 20th in the Championship, so I think without him and his team we wouldn’t be in that position. I think he deserves a bit of loyalty.”
When questioned about the possibility of a lengthy suspension affecting their stance on Eckert, Parsons stated, “I don’t know. We’ll decide that when we get to it. We’re hoping they look at it sensibly.”
