Solis, Paik, and Priske Start: Predicted Five Changes for Birmingham City at Charlton

Birmingham City return to The Valley on Saturday with the clear objective of avenging last season’s defeat and reigniting their Championship play-off hopes. Last year, Charlton Athletic handed the Blues one of their rare League One losses, a game where Birmingham failed to register a single shot on target. Another poor showing this weekend could effectively end their top-six ambitions.

Following back-to-back defeats against Millwall and Middlesbrough, Birmingham now find themselves eight points off the play-off zone. Climbing back will require not only a victory against Charlton but also slip-ups from the teams above them. With stakes this high, Chris Davies must get his team selection precisely right.

The goalkeeper debate continues, but after James Beadle’s recent performances, Davies seems set to maintain his trust in the young shot-stopper. More pressing is the likely change at right-back, with Bright Osayi-Samuel’s struggles suggesting a return for Tomoki Iwata, who has proven his quality both in defense and midfield.

In central defense, Jonathan Panzo remains the leading candidate to partner Iwata, alongside Christoph Klarer and Kai Wagner. However, Phil Neumann and Jack Robinson await opportunities, and Davies will need to ensure his defenders can cope physically with Charlton’s direct style of play. The Addicks are fourth in the league for long balls per game and excel in aerial challenges, making defensive resilience crucial.

Midfield will see Jhon Solis and Paik Seung-ho both back in the lineup, providing fresh energy and creativity. Upfront, August Priske is expected to lead the attack again, having impressed when partnered with Marvin Ducksch, the club’s leading scorer this season with six goals. Priske’s presence has previously strengthened the team’s forward momentum, so Davies is unlikely to bench him in favor of Jay Stansfield, whose recent form has been less prolific.

On the wings, Carlos Vicente will likely start on the right, preferred for away games, while Demarai Gray edges ahead of Ibrahim Osman on the left, offering valuable experience shortly after his return from injury. Davies appears inclined to favor seasoned players in this critical fixture.

Predicted Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Beadle; Iwata, Klarer, Panzo, Wagner; Solis, Paik; Vicente, Ducksch, Gray; Priske

With just a handful of games remaining, all eyes will be on Birmingham City to see if they can turn their season around with a vital win at Charlton.
