Birmingham City face a crucial test tonight as they visit Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, seeking their first away Championship victory since October. With the game kicking off at 7:45pm, the Blues are under pressure to deliver a positive result.
Sheffield Wednesday’s situation couldn’t be bleaker. Sitting bottom of the table with a negative seven goal difference, they have managed just four points from 14 home games this season. Manager Henrik Pedersen is grappling with significant challenges that overshadow Birmingham’s recent squad challenges.
Injury concerns continue to affect Birmingham City. Defenders Jack Robinson, Alex Cochrane, and Ethan Laird, along with winger Demarai Gray, are expected to miss out once again. Bright Osayi-Samuel, who recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, may also be sidelined following an early substitution in Nigeria’s third-place playoff due to injury fears.

On a brighter note, Birmingham have recently added Jhon Solis and Ibrahim Osman to their ranks. However, manager Chris Davies faces a loan player selection challenge. Osman becomes the sixth loan player at Blues, joining James Beadle, Tommy Doyle, Solis, Patrick Roberts, and Lewis Koumas. Championship regulations allow only five loan players in a matchday squad, meaning one must be left out.
Davies' recent benches have lacked experience, limiting his options to influence games from the sidelines. Jay Stansfield’s impact as a substitute against Swansea City demonstrated the value of a fresh attacking presence. If fit, Stansfield is expected to start alongside Marvin Ducksch up front, a potent partnership that currently offers Blues their best attacking chance after Kyogo Furuhashi’s continued goal drought in the league.
The midfield and defense largely select themselves. Lewis Koumas should retain his place on the left wing, despite Osman’s arrival, while Jhon Solis may need more time to earn a starting spot ahead of Tommy Doyle or Paik Seung-ho in the central midfield roles.
Defensive injuries mean Davies will likely stick with Tomoki Iwata, Phil Neumann, Christoph Klarer, and Kai Wagner at the back.
Predicted Birmingham City XI (4-2-3-1):
Beadle; Iwata, Neumann, Klarer, Wagner; Doyle, Paik; Roberts, Stansfield, Koumas; Ducksch
