Residents of Solihull town centre are awaiting news on the reopening of their local Post Office branch, following the closure of the TG Jones store in Mell Square this summer, which housed the previous Post Office counter.
Since the store’s closure on 11 July, community members have had to travel over a mile to the nearest Post Office in Elmdon Heath for their postal services. Recognising the impact, local officials have been actively engaged in efforts to restore a town centre presence.
Solihull Council’s leader, Councillor Karen Grinsell, has reassured residents that the council is collaborating with Post Office Ltd to facilitate potential franchise applications. This involves exploring suitable premises within the town centre, although any final decision rests solely with Post Office Ltd. Councillor Grinsell emphasised, “We are working to support potential franchise applications by exploring suitable premises within the town centre.”

At a July council meeting, Councillor Heather Delaney, the deputy leader and cabinet portfolio holder for economy, business, and skills, highlighted that the provision of Post Office services is governed by a private contractual relationship, formerly with TG Jones and now with Post Office Counters Ltd. She noted that Post Office Counters Ltd remains committed to maintaining a Post Office in Solihull town centre and confirmed that the opportunity to operate a franchise there has been advertised, attracting significant interest.
Further updates came from Solihull West and Shirley MP Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, who shared information from Post Office Counters Ltd via social media. The update confirmed that applications are currently progressing and that once a successful applicant is confirmed, details about the branch’s location and opening date will be provided. Dr Shastri-Hurst encouraged residents to “stay tuned” for forthcoming information.
The TG Jones store closed with a notice stating: “We’ve now closed this store. Thank you for shopping with us.” In response, a Post Office spokesperson acknowledged the importance of its services to the local community, stating: “We have advertised the vacancy and would welcome interest from retailers looking to host a post office branch within their store.”
