Solihull Family Business Mahoney’s DIY Closes After 50 Years, Marking the End of an Era

After nearly five decades of serving Solihull and its surrounding areas, the family-run business Mahoney’s DIY has closed its doors, ending a significant chapter in the town’s history. Located on Old Lode Lane, Mahoney’s was a trusted supplier of building materials and a cornerstone of the community.

The property recently sold at auction for £1.25 million, signaling the conclusion of operations at the Solihull location. However, the family business will continue to operate from its site in Streetly, ensuring that Mahoney’s legacy lives on.

The Mahoney family took to social media to announce the closure, expressing heartfelt thanks to their dedicated staff and loyal customers. Their message honored everyone who contributed to the business over the years, from the founders Mick and Julia to those who continued the legacy — including John, Karen, and Dick Mahoney.

Customers quickly responded with touching memories, reflecting the store’s deep impact. One recalled childhood visits with their father, noting how valuable the DIY lessons learned at Mahoney’s were. Another shared a humorous story about being sent for a “glass hammer” in the mid-1980s. A former employee credited Mahoney’s with shaping their career and personal growth, highlighting the close-knit family atmosphere the business fostered.

In their farewell post, the Mahoney family said:
“Mahoney’s became more than a workplace—it became a family. Over the years, many young people got their first taste of the working world here, gaining skills that helped them succeed in many careers. Our staff’s loyalty has been unmatched, and none of this would have been possible without our wonderful customers who supported us through every challenge—from economic recessions to a global pandemic.”

As Mahoney’s DIY closes this chapter, their story remains a testament to the enduring power of community and family dedication in local business.
