Solihull Council Reverses Decision After Incorrect Road Markings Confuse Drivers

Solihull Council has had to backtrack after erroneous road markings on a key roundabout caused widespread confusion among drivers.

Earlier this month, contractors mistakenly painted misleading lane lines on the Poppy Island roundabout in Shirley. Drivers heading southbound on the A34 towards Hall Green suddenly found themselves diverted towards Olton, leaving many baffled and frustrated.

Social media buzzed with drivers sharing their confusion, with some questioning whether they were misreading the new layout or simply going “round the bend.”

Councillor Sharma highlighted that the incorrect markings led to several near-misses and urged the council to rectify the situation immediately. Responding swiftly, Solihull Council arranged for the contractor to remove the faulty lines and restore the original traffic flow by March 16.

Wayne, a recovery truck driver familiar with the roundabout, described the chaos caused: “The middle lane to Hall Green completely disappeared and redirected traffic towards Olton instead. The left lane split, leaving everyone wondering what was going on. There were no signs to alert drivers of a new layout, which only added to the confusion.”

He reported his concerns to Councillor Sharma, who promptly liaised with highways officers to ensure the correct markings were reinstated.

Driver Dawn Cox also shared her experience: “I ended up turning right when I meant to go straight—something like that had never happened before even after hundreds of trips around that roundabout!”

The council has since confirmed that the incorrect markings have been removed and the original, correct layout is back in place, helping drivers navigate safely and confidently once again.
