Two legendary horses who were integral to the London 2012 Olympic gold-winning dressage team have passed away. Carl Hester shared the poignant news on social media, bidding farewell to Blueberry (Valegro) and Uti (Uthopia), describing them as “two of the greatest horses of our generation.”
Both horses had been facing health challenges in recent years, and Hester explained that allowing them to leave this world together was “the final act of loyalty and dignity” he could offer these lifelong companions.
Hester reflected, “Sleep well Blueberry and Uti. Saying goodbye to Valegro and Uthopia is an immense sadness that is hard to comprehend. The yard feels empty without them; there’s a void that cannot be filled.”

He praised their extraordinary contributions, adding, “Valegro and Uthopia did more than win medals and make history – they ushered in a golden era for our sport. They embodied greatness with gentle sensitivity and harmony, inspiring a nation and countless fans worldwide.”
Their lives were intertwined from competition to retirement. Hester said, “They travelled side by side, lived in neighbouring stables, grazed the same fields, and shared an unbreakable bond. Allowing them to depart together honoured that lifelong partnership.”
Charlotte Dujardin, who famously rode Valegro, shared an emotional tribute expressing deep love and gratitude. She described Blueberry as her “constant and rock” through life’s highs and lows, praising his heart, mind, and the unique connection they shared. Dujardin remembered how Valegro transformed dressage and touched the lives of many with his gentle nature and joy-giving presence.
“You brought hope, love, and belief to everyone you met,” she wrote. “The magic we shared was beyond medals — it was the pure love of a horse. I will love and miss you always.”
Both horses leave behind a lasting legacy of excellence, loyalty, and inspiration in the dressage community and beyond. Though their physical presence is gone, the impact of Blueberry and Uti lives on in the hearts of all who admired them.
