Six New Mandatory Eye Checks Proposed for Drivers Over 70 in England

Drivers over the age of 70 in England could soon be required to undergo six specific eyesight checks to ensure they remain safe on the road. The Labour government is currently consulting on introducing mandatory vision tests for older motorists as part of its comprehensive Road Safety Strategy.

Specsavers, a leading high street optician with branches across the UK, including Birmingham, outlines six essential components typically involved in a thorough eye examination. The Department for Transport highlights that eyesight often deteriorates with age—affecting visual acuity, peripheral vision, and glare recovery. These changes may develop gradually and unnoticed, increasing the risk of accidents if left uncorrected.

The proposed examination begins with retinoscopy, a test that measures how well the eyes can focus and identifies whether the individual is long- or short-sighted. During this test, an optometrist shines a light into each eye and places various lenses in front to determine the correct prescription.

In some cases, pupil-dilating drops may be used to allow a clearer inspection of the eye’s internal structures.

Next, patients are asked to read from a Snellen chart (commonly known as the letter chart) to measure visual acuity, determining if their vision meets the 20/20 standard or if corrective lenses are needed.

A specialized torch is then used to examine the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye to ensure these are healthy.

The slit lamp, a type of powerful microscope, allows detailed inspection of the eye’s front surface—the cornea, iris, and lens—to identify abnormalities or scratches. This is particularly vital for contact lens wearers.

Peripheral vision is tested by assessing the ability to detect flashes of light, an important measure for early identification of conditions such as glaucoma or other health issues that may cause headaches.

Finally, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a hospital-grade scan that provides detailed images of the eye’s internal structures. This technology can detect eye conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy up to four years earlier than traditional methods. OCT scans only take a few seconds and can be requested at local optician stores.

These proposed checks aim to ensure that older drivers maintain the necessary eyesight standards to drive safely, potentially reducing the risk of collisions and enhancing overall road safety across England.
